What Are The Types Of Abortion?
There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. How far along you are in your pregnancy determines what type of abortion method will be used.
Medical Abortion
You qualify for a medical abortion if you are no farther than 10 weeks and 0 days into your pregnancy. You’ll find out how long you’ve been pregnant in your free pre-abortion screening.
The abortion pill is the most common medical abortion method. Interestingly, it isn’t just one pill and you’re done. It’s two powerful drugs taken over a 24 – 48 hours timeframe.
Pregnancies need a hormone called progesterone to grow and thrive. The first drug you take in a medical abortion blocks your uterus from absorbing progesterone. As a result, the fetus can no longer stay implanted. The second drug causes your body to contract to expel the fetus.
According to the Mayo Clinic, these are the side effects you’ll most likely experience:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Headache
These are the potential risks:
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
- An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
- Possible emotional and psychological issues
Surgical Abortion
Surgical abortions are completed in a medical facility. The farther you are in your pregnancy, the more invasive the methods become. There are several different surgical abortion procedures each using a form of suction aspiration. Dilation & Curettage (D&C) and Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) also use surgical instruments to scrape the inside of the uterus. A D & E uses forceps to remove the fetus because of its size.
The Mayo Clinic lists these as side effects and possible risks:
- Perforation of the uterus
- Damage to the cervix
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall
- Infection
- Bleeding that’s heavy enough that you need to change pads every hour
- Fever
- Cramps lasting more than 48 hours
- Pain that gets worse instead of better
- Foul-smelling discharge from the vagina
